What is so special about 14 February? It is a date where flowers, gifts and chocolates are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. According to a legend, St. Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. Many people did not like him because he wanted the men to join the army. As a result, not many men signed up for the army because they did not want to fight in wars and leave their families. This made Claudius furious and he had an insane idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would join the army. Then Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. The new law was cruel indeed. St. Valentine did not support the law at all and he kept on performing marriage ceremonies for many couples - secretly, of course. One night while performing a ceremony, unfortunately, he was caught red-handed and sentenced to death. While in the prison, it is believed that St. Valentine fell in love with a young girl who was a jailor's daughter. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'Love from your Valentine'. St. Valentine died on February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember about St. Valentine and they think about love and friendship.
